On 7 September 2012 we celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Borodino. This battle is now one of the greatest chapters in Russian military history, despite the fact that it was Napoleon`s army that won the day. They sustained considerably less casualties than the Tsar`s army. The Russian retreat opened the way for Napoleon`s entry into Moscow. Despite all appearences Borodino was a Pyrrhic victory.
What do you think about it? Whose victory was it?

Napoleon wrote in his memoirs: "The battle of Moscow was the most awful. The French showed that they deserved victory, the Russians gained the right to be invincible. "
It`s difficult to say. The French entered Moscow after it. But for Napoleon it was a bitter victory. Soon after that the Grand Army grew weak and was driven away from Russia.
I absolutely agree with the previous comment. To my mind, there was neither the winner nor the looser. Russian army had a great deal of casualties but thanks to tactical and strategic skills of our commanders Napoleon's army had weakened and gone away from Russia.
My favorite strophe from "Borodino" by M.Lermontov describes my thoughts about this battle:
I think that there was no winner in this battle. Napoleon forsed russians to retire and leave Moscow, but his army was weak, exhausted, and didnt receive neither food, nor rest in Moscow. Ways of supply were cut by guerrillas.. As a result, Napoleon's army moved back on the road plundered in the summer and lose the main part of army. Both, Russia and France, suffered heavy losses, so, there was no winner.
