Today in Great Britain they celebrate two holidays. One is official, the other is not.
The first one is Trafalgar Day. It celebrates the victory of the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
Sea Cadets hold a national Parade on Trafalgar Square each year.
The second one is Apple Day. It is an annual celebration of apples and orchards held mainly in the United Kingdom.
It was initially organized by the charity and lobby group Common Ground. It was established as a holiday to celebrate local produce with the apple symbolizing local foods. Moreover, an apple is the symbol of cultural, physical and genetic variety.
Apple Day events are various. They include apple games, village fairs, cookery demonstrations and hundreds of apple varieties.
Among the funniest and most popular apple contests are Shooting at Apples and the Longest Peel Competition.
As for me, I like apple pies very much. Here is my favourite recipe.
3 eggs
1 cup of sugar
half a teasponful of baking soda
1 cup of flour
7 - 8 apples
Beat up eggs with sugar. Add some vinegar to baking soda to make it bubble and mix it with eggs. Add one cup of flour and mix thoroughly. Peel apples and slice them into the baking dish (which is slightly oiled). Then pour the dough onto the apples and put the pie into the hot oven. Wait for about 40 - 60 minutes. Here you are! The tastiest apple pie is ready!
Bon Appetit!
